Cyber resilience starts with clear ownership

If your business lost access to its email or customer platform tomorrow, who would coordinate the response? How would colleagues reach each other? Which services would need attention first?

These are useful questions for a leadership team. They connect cyber resilience to the work the business needs to keep doing and make responsibilities easier to discuss.

Start with what matters to the operation

List the systems and information your most important activities depend on. Include external providers and the people who can contact them. Ask each business owner what an interruption would mean for customers, colleagues and essential commitments.

This does not need to become a large document before it is useful. A clear, maintained view of critical dependencies can help people decide where to focus their attention.

Give the basics an owner

The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s small organisations guide covers securing email and accounts, protecting devices, backing up data and spotting attacks. It provides a practical reference for a discussion with your IT team or support provider.

For each area, ask who is responsible, how they know the protection is working and how gaps are reported. Check that arrangements still make sense as people join, change roles or leave, and as the business introduces new suppliers and tools.

Make reporting straightforward

People need a simple way to raise a concern, whether that is an unexpected login prompt, a suspicious message or a device that has gone missing. Tell colleagues who to contact and what to do if their usual communication channel is unavailable.

Encourage early reporting without blame. A process that people understand and are comfortable using is more helpful than instructions they hesitate to follow.

Talk through a disruption together

Choose a realistic scenario and discuss the first decisions you would need to make. Who coordinates the response? Who contacts the provider? Who approves customer updates? Where are the contact details kept?

Capture anything unclear, assign actions and revisit the plan after changes to your operation. This is a way to test shared understanding and identify where more specialist support is needed.
